Build Green with BOWMAN CONSTRUCTION

BUILD GREEN WITH BOWMAN CONSTRUCTION & DESIGN INC.

Building green means incorporating environmental considerations and resource efficiency into every step of the home building and land development process to minimize environmental impact. During the design, construction, and operation of a home, energy and water efficiency, lot development, resource efficient building design and materials, indoor environmental quality and homeowner maintenance should all be considered. Although we cannot entirely avoid affecting the environment when a house is built, green building can work toward minimizing that environmental impact.

The concept of green building isn’t new-our great-grandparents built climate-appropriate homes using locally-available materials. Today’s green homes incorporate not only climatic considerations, but are resource and energy efficient, safer for occupants, and often less expensive to maintain.

Green Construction Permit Incentive

ar123274437758008

Written By Mike Kelly Jr.  1/23/09

The Green Building incentives section of the Catawba County’s building fee structures is a special allowance to provide an incentive for building in accordance with LEED, Energy Star, and NC Healthy Built Homes.

The incentive based fee structure is intended to increase renewable/sustainable energy technologies and green building certifications for homes and commercial buildings in Catawba County.

Various permit and plan review incentives are available for new and existing construction. To qualify, the builder or owner needs to obtain all permitting from Catawba County and a green building certification from a third party agency (LEED, Energy Star, etc.). For new construction, once a Certificate of Occupancy is issued, a percentage of the permit fees will be reimbursed to the permit holder.

For existing structures, upon completion of final inspection, permit fee rebates will be issued to the permit holder.

Catawba County will rebate all fees related to plan review or express review for commercial buildings seeking LEED certification.

Regular fees must be paid in full at time of plan review or permit issuance. Fee rebates will be refunded upon project completion and certification by a third party agency.

Here are just some of the examples of residential rebates:

Geothermal Heat Pump – Mechanical Permit Fee – 50% rebate – $27.50 value

Geothermal Heat Pump – Electrical Permit Fee – 50% rebate – $25.00 value

Solar Hot Water  – Electrical Permit Fee  – 50% rebate – $25.00 value

Solar Hot Water  – Plumbing Permit Fee  – 50% rebate – $12.50 value

Gray Water Collection for flushing fixtures – Plumbing Permit Fee – 50% rebate – $30.50 value

Hickory High School Embraces GREEN

Written by:   Mike Kelly Jr.   1/17/2009

Due to the drought that has gripped the south east for more than a year – the city of Hickory has restricted water usage for its businesses and residents.  Hickory High School has a found a way around the city water restrictions. They are participating in the Community Conservation Assistance Program through the NC Department of Environmental and Natural Resources.

The school will install a cistern to hold rain water that drains off the roof of the athletic building. The cistern will hold the rainwater until the school needs it to water plants, garden, and irrigate the athletic fields around the building.

The state will pay for seventy-five percent of the cost through the Community Conservation Assistance Program. This will cover the cistern, pipes and other materials.  The school will just have to dig the hole.

The tank will hold seventeen hundred gallons and will be installed underground.  The hope is that it will catch up to fifty-five thousand gallons of rain water per year. Besides being used to irrigate the vegetation around the school this cistern will also slow the water going into storm drains which will improve overall water quality.

It is great to hear about local groups increasing the awareness of the importance of water conservation.

Hickory NC Receives Environmental Award

Written by: Mike Kelly Jr.  11/25/2008

Hickory was recognized at the North Carolina League of Municipalities annual conference in October for committing to efficient, energy-saving operations and practices. Hickory received the Level One achievement for the NCLM Green Challenge.

Last summer the NCLM challenged municipalities state-wide to implement long-range and short-term actions that would conserve resources and save money.

NCLM hopes such implementations will protect the environment and operating municipal government in a more cost-¬effective, energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly manner. To achieve Level One recognition, municipalities were required to complete three of five steps. Hickory had already completed four of the five steps, including:

1- adopting a sustainability plan in June 2008

2- creating an energy improvement plan in January 2000

3- conducting an energy audit of two or more government facilities in January 2004 and implementing recommendations

4- creating a water conservation education program in February 2008

North Carolina League of Municipalities Challenge consists of three levels. Level Two requirements have not yet been released, but will focus on topics such as energy efficiency, green building, waste management, green fleets, land-use and transportation and water and air quality.

The great thing about Hickory going green is that it is not just about saving the planet it is also about saving money for the residents.

Wyke’s Cleaners Eco-Friendly in Hickory

Written by:  Mike Kelly Jr.  11/24/2008

I have been using Wyke’s Cleaners on 127 in Hickory for over a year now.  I am very excited that they have embraced the eco friendly movement.  They offer GREEN bags (a reusable dry cleaning bag – it switches from duffel bag to haul laundry to suit bag to bring home the garments)  for your dry cleaning instead of the plastic dry cleaner bags. They also allow customers to return the wire hangers to be recylced and reused.
